Infertility may be due to problems with the female, the male, or a combination of both or there could be some unknown causes. In females, many cases are due to pathologies in the fallopian tubes; scarred tubes from pelvic inflammatory disease, STD’s, or from an infection related to an IUD. Fibroids, cancerous tumours, or endometriosis can also block the egg from moving through the fallopian tubes or even prevent its production. Fallopian tube damage or blockage usually results from inflammation of the fallopian tube. The most frequent cause is Chlamydia or other STD’s. The fertilized egg is unable to make its way through the fallopian tube to implant to the uterus resulting in ectopic pregnancy. Even one episode of tubal infection may cause fertility problems and increases the risk of ectopic pregnancy – unpleasant and painful – and can cause longterm or permanent damage. Endometriosis occurs when the uterine tissue implants and grows outside of the uterus often affecting the function of the ovaries, uterus, and fallopian tubes and resulting in inflammation and scarring which blocks the fallopian tubes or ovaries. Pelvic pain and infertility are common in women with endometriosis. There is controversy as to whether medical or surgical treatment for mild endometriosis will improve pregnancy rates for infertile women as compared to no treatment or medical intervention. Ovulation disorders can cause infertility.
